Colombia invests $850M in troubled southwest

Colombia’s government has signed an $850 million investment deal with the western department of Nariño in a bid to improve the area over the next five years, local media reported on Sunday.

Colombian radio station, La W reported that the grant, $680 million of which will come from the national government with the rest coming from the department’s local government, will be used to implement around 50 different infrastructure plans.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said that the deal is “the biggest investment Nariño has had in its history.”

Of the proposed projects, most center around improving clean water systems and sanitation, education, health, energy, and agricultural development.
