Judoka Yuri Alvear, Colombia’s flagbearer at Rio Olympics, wins silver

Judoka Yuri Alvear won silver at the Rio Olympics on Wednesday, securing Colombia’s second medal at the iconic sporting event.

The Colombian flag bearer was beaten by Japanese judoka Haruka Tachimoto in the final of the Women’s 70kg category.

While asking her country for forgiveness not winning Colombia’s second gold medial these Olympics, Alvear was overcome with joy thanks to her excellent performance.

“I am smiling from ear to ear. How not be happy if God allowed me to be blessed with winning the second medal at the Olympic Games,” the 30-year-old Alvear told press.

In 2012, the Colombian athlete won bronze.

Alvear’s latest medal followed that of weight lifter Oscar Figueroa who obtained gold on Monday.
