Entrepreneurs from Colombia’s Caribbean coast designed a digital platform for companies to monitor their drivers in order to diminish costs and prevent thefts and even accidents, local media reported Wednesday.

Falcon System, the satellite monitoring digital platform, has been created in response to employers’ complaints against gasoline theft, accidents, delays, and car thefts, according to newspaper El Espectador.

The ingenious system provides audio and visual real-time support and monitoring, detection of fuel subtraction, detection of alcohol, detection of machine parts needing replacement, automatic switching off of the engine in case of theft, route control, and many other features.

Created by Damian Barrios and his partners with the support of  Apps.co, an initiative of Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to support entrepreneurship, the Entrepreneurship Center of the Bolivar University of Technology, and Vivelab Cartagena, the platform has now 160 vehicles monitored in three states from the coast of Colombia.

According to Barrios, the satellite platform was created “because we saw the need to get into issues that no one else was willing to,”  with the hope that Colombia’s government and police would collaborate and see the advantages of this type of monitoring, Blu Radio reported.

Colombia’s precarious infrastructure as well as poor monitoring system are some of the reasons why the country has a shocking traffic related death rate.

According to an article published by El Pais newspaper last year, one Colombian dies every 85 minutes as a result of road accidents.
