British soccer club Aston Villa officially signed Colombia’s defensive midfielder, Carlos Sanchez, on Friday, according to the team website.

Rumors linking Carlos Sanchez to Aston Villa have now been confirmed, and for the next four years, the defensive midfielder will wear the red and blue Aston Villa jersey, according to the club’s website.

Aston Villa’s manager referred to the transfer as “a great coup for Villa,” and praised the Colombian’s performance during the World Cup.

“We’ve beaten other teams to bring him here to Villa, and I’m delighted as we needed someone of his ilk to come in. He’ll be an excellent player for the club.”

Sanchez himself was also happy with his new English adventure, arriving from Spanish side Elche. The Colombian stated that he has followed the club ever since fellow-countryman Juan Pablo Angel wore the Aston Villa shirt from the first time in 2001.

“I’m delighted to be here. It’s something I have always dreamed of, and it is very important for me to be here at Aston Villa, not only for me but for my family as well. It was always my aim to play in this country and in this league and I know Villa well as Juan Pablo also played here.”

The Colombian defensive midfielder considers the Premier League as one of the most well-rounded leagues in the world, and looks forward to get to know his teammates and their fans.

Sanchez, alias “The Rock,” recognized that his defensive efforts in the World Cup is what attracted the Birmingham team.

Transfer rumors have been flying all over international media, and several members from Colombia’s World Cup team have been announced by their new teams.
