The bocadillo veleño, a sweet typically found in Colombia, will be granted Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), authorities announced.

A traditional sweet treat, the bocadillo veleño is made from guava fruit and is produced in the Santander department of Colombia. This is not the first Colombian product bestowed with a PDO – Colombian coffee was registered with the same measure in September 2007.

The PDO is designed to protect unique products, typically related to food and drink, which are traditionally created in a unique geographical location and may also have unique properties.

Its establishment means that the food is legally protected on an international level, preventing other producers from unfairly capitalizing on the success of the initial product.
