Colombia’s ambassador to Washington resigns

Colombia’s ambassador to Washington has resigned, said President Juan Manuel Santos Saturday.

The president announced his ambassador’s resignation at a public meeting in which he praised Ambassador Gabriel Silva’s role in the approval of a free trade agreement (FTA) between the United States and Colombia.

“We agreed with Gabriel Silva from the beginning that he would be in charge of the FTA … and the truth is he did that in record time,” Santos said.

According to Santos, Silva “deserves a very special congratulation.”

Silva was appointed ambassador to Washington in July 2010 after having been Santos’ successor as minister of defense.
