Colombians to create record-breaking carpet of flowers

Colombian flower artisans will travel to New York to attempt to break the world record for the largest carpet of flowers, newspaper El Colombiano reported Tuesday.

“Silleteros” – artisans who carry intricate flower arrangements in “silletas” on their backs – currently taking part in Medellin’s Flower Festival, will travel to the Big Apple as guests of honor to participate in New York’s Festival of Flowers.

They will create a carpet of flowers of approximately 8,202 square feet in front of Queens Museum of Art. The current record for the largest carpet of flowers is held by The Real Flower Petal Confetti Company for a 81,164 square feet carpet of flowers in the United Kingdom in 2004.

The carpet of flowers, which seeks to create awareness about the importance of the protecting the environment and protecting the planet, will be formed of solely Colombian flowers.

The Second New York Festival of Flowers will take place between August 19 and 28 in the boroughs of Manhattan and Queens.
