Two Bogota citizens are the first ones ever who managed to falsify the
Australian dollar, which is considered to be the most secure bill
When the DAS began to investigate on the forgery, they were convinced that a complex organization was behind this. But after nearly two years of researching and monitoring, they discovered that only two men achieved the impossible – counterfeiting the Australian dollar.
The story began when Carlos Andres, a very wealthy and prestigious banker, went to Australia with his girlfriend and experienced discrimination against their Latin origin. Upon his return to Colombia he vowed revenge and planned to falsify the Australian currency. Andres contacted his friend Oscar Jose, a successful graphic designer, and they started their business. Both men invested nearly 150 million pesos, around U.S.$ 70,000, in the forgery.
Jose patiently adjusted and adapted the light, temperature, pressure, color and paper to counterfeit the bills. When he had already reached 96 per cent of similarity with the genuine bill, the detectives captured him. He had enough paper and supplies to falsify 10 million Australian dollars.
The discovery of the Colombian detectives who worked hand in hand with the U.S. Secret Service and the Australian police is unique. So far, nobody else managed to forge the Australian currency. Experts from all over the world study this case.
