Colombian tennis player Santiago Giraldo advances to Mercedes Cup quarter-finals

Colombian tennis player Santiago Giraldo defeated France’s Jeremy Chardy in the second round of the 2011 Mercedes Cup on Wednesday.

The Colombian, ranked 61st in the world, upset Jeremy Chardy in three tough-fought sets: 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Chardy initially dominated the match, winning 6-1 and 1-0 in the first two sets. The players were interrupted by rain during the second set, which gave Giraldo time to recover and eventually win the match.

Santiago Giraldo will face off against Poland’s Lukasz Kubot, who is currently seeded 8th in the Stuttgart, Germany tournament.
