Colombian soccer league to be revamped

The Colombian Liga Postobon will undergo a major change in 2011, as the final stages of the tournament are set to be revamped.

At the moment, the top eight teams of the regular season advance to a second stage which consists of two groups of four teams each. The winners of those groups then qualify for the final.

The Colombian football association Dimayor, along with the 36 professional teams, agreed that starting next season, this system will no longer be applied.

While the best eight teams of the season still advance, they will now play in a knock-out system with quarter finals and semi finals leading to the final.

The best four teams will be seeded for the quarter finals, which guarantees that they won’t meet until the semi finals.

The first of next year’s two tournaments will be slightly shorter in time than usual as the calendar needs to make space for the Under-20 World Cup and the Copa America, which will be played in Colombia and Argentina respectively.
