Colombian skater Baena victorious in Berlin

by Jonathan Roorda August 31, 2009

Colombian roller speed skater Cecilia Baena won the half marathon
of Berlin Sunday and mathematically secured victory in the overall season
classification.

The Cartagena-born Baena finished first in the German capital, and can no longer be surpassed in the World Cup standings.

“This victory mathematically assures me the title, but I will still have to ride the remaining races to avoid the risk of losing the first position,” Baena said.

The Colombian was also happy with the support and attention she receives from her home country: “I am happy that you pay attention to the performance of Colombian sportspersons abroad, because this motivates and gives strength to keep going.”

After finishing races in Berlin and Cohen, both in Germany, the season concluded on the Venezuelan island of Isla Margarita.
