A missing Colombian professor has been found dead in Missouri, U.S., after having disappeared on May 21 during the tornado that has devastated the area.

Jose Olimpo Alvarez, a Spanish professor at the University of Missouri, appears to have perished on the same day that the tornado destroyed Joplin, Missouri.

The 55-year-old had graduated in Anthropology in Bogota before moving to the U.S. and gaining dual nationality.

Latest reports count 142 deaths as a result of the tornado, although the number of missing people is unknown. Authorities have not permitted families to see the bodies, preferring instead to rely on DNA testing to identify them.
