Colombian prisons home to 28% more inmates in 2011

Colombia’s prisons end 2011 with 126,976 inmates, which is a 28% increase compared to last year.

According to the country’s prison authority, INPEC, 55,112 people were imprisoned throughout the year while 19,231 were released.

In 2010, 31,749 were imprisoned and 36,083 were released.

791 of the inmates are foreign, 54 are politicians with ties to illegal armed groups and 1,745 members of the security forces.
