Colombian navy seized 800 tons of cocaine since 1997

by Adriaan Alsema September 2, 2010

Colombia news - USS New Orleans

The Colombian navy has intercepted 800 tons of cocaine since 1997, thanks to a pact made with the U.S. in that year, navy commander Alvaro Echandia told Terra.

The pact between the two navies “has been extremely successful,” Echandia told RCN Radio, adding that the bilateral pact “has made it very difficult for drug trafficking.”

The U.S. “has been a very important partner” for Colombia “in the fight against the drug traffickers and the control over the routes” of drug trafficking, the military official said.

The U.S. supports Colombia in the country’s fight against leftist rebels and the drug industry.
