Colombian loses in French Open doubles final

The unseeded men’s doubles pair of Colombian Juan Sebastian Cabal and Argentine Eduardo Schwank have lost in the French Open final in three sets.

The dream run of the unfancied duo, which had seen them shock American top-seeded record-holders the Bryans brothers in the semi-finals, finally ended in defeat against Canadian David Nestor and Belarusian Max Mirnyi, who won 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 6-4 in Paris on Saturday afternoon.

After losing a tight first set on a tie-break, the South American partners bounced back to win the second set and take the match into a decider, which their second-seeded opponents eventually came through victorious.

Cabal’s appearance in the prestigious Roland Garros final was the first time ever that a Colombian had reached a Grand Slam men’s doubles final, while it was the first time since 1977 that a Colombian had reached any Grand Slam final.

The 25-year-old from Cali, ranked 100 in men’s doubles prior to the event, will see a significant boost to his ranking after an impressive tournament showing that unfortunately for him ended in defeat.
