10,000 Colombian prosecutors and judges investigated for corruption

More than ten thousand Colombian judicial officials are under investigation for corruption, Maria Mercedes Lopez, president of Colombia’s Superior Judicial Council, announced Thursday.

“There is a perverse conspiracy of plaintiffs, defendents, and judges”, Lopez said in a interview with Caracol TV.

The Superior Judicial Council is charged with the inspection of judicial handling in Colombia.

According to Lopez 13,737 judical officials are under investigation in different departments of the country, while the Superior Judicial Council is conducting 1,756 investigations of corruption.

On the other hand, Fabio Hernandez, the president of the Colombian union of judicial employees, says that “judicial officials have huge amounts of processes, about 1,000 or 2,000. Four or five dissatisfied people or lawyers in those processes denounce and sue. That’s why an official may be under several investigations, but it does not mean that the official is guilty”

Caracol TV also reported that some Colombian inspection agencies have denounced the alleged presence of drug cartels in the Colombian judicial system.
