Colombian government favors “empty chairs” as solution to Senate parapolitics scandal

The government wants to implement a political framework that makes the political party responsible if one of the party’s senators is suspended. The “empty chair solution” would affect a party’s dominance in the Senate directly and force a party to secure their Senators are “clean” .”This initiative is something revolutionary in public law worldwide,” Holguín said, “it would be an effective response to the outcry of the public opinion and would be a solution to what is happening in Congress.”The political reform, as suggested by the government, will be presented to Colombia’s House of Representatives for a vote next week.
