Colombian Falla through to third round at Australian Open

by Jonathan Roorda January 21, 2010

Alejandro Falla

Colombian tennis player Alejandro Falla advanced to the third round of the Australian Open following a three-set win over Spaniard Marcel Granollers.

Falla beat his Spanish opponent 6-4 in the first set, then dominated the second with a 6-1 result and went on to finish with a 6-3 win in the third and final set.

The 26-year-old from Cali had reached seven second rounds in previous Grand Slam tournaments, but never made his way into the third.

In the third round, Falla faces another Spaniard, 26th-placed Nicolas Almagro.

Colombia’s other participant, Santiago Giraldo, who surprisingly beat Tommy Robredo in the opening round, lost 3-1 in sets to Polish Lukasz Kubot.
