Defense Minister apologizes to Spain

Colombian Defense Minister Gabriel Silva offered his apologies to Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero for telling the Spanish PM to mind his own business after Rodriguez Zapatero had offered to mediate with Venezuela.

According to Silva, Colombia recognizes the good will expressed by the Rodriguez Zapatero and the important partner Spain is for Colombia.

“I am from the countryside. I come from working in the rural sector and sometimes we are not as elegant as those in diplomatic circles,” the Defense Minister explained Wednesday.

However, Silva insisted in his rejection of Spanish help to resolve the crisis with Venezuela.

Venezuela and Colombia are going through a diplomatic crisis after the Colombian Government announced it would allow the United States to use Colombian military bases. Venezuela considers this a threat to its sovereignty. Other South American countries have expressed their concerns over the plan.
