Colombian cyclist wins pre-Olympic event

Colombia cyclist Juan Esteban Arango won gold at the Track World Cup in London Friday.

Arango, who also won the last World Cup in Cali, took the gold metal after finishing the six-event Omnium with 21 point points. The Omnium features a series of tests in which the winner is awarded one point for each event, the cyclist with the fewest points wins the overall title.

“I am happy to have won this new medal,” Arango told daily El Espectador, “I left feeling very good because I won by a lot but I definitely see room for improvements as well.”

The event gives Arango confidence ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games, to be staged in London in July and August.

When asked about the 2012 London Olympics, Arango said, “It isn’t easy to win a gold metal, there’s a lot of pressure and considering that I’ve won two gold medals in the World Cups, my rivals will be preparing for me.”

With 24 points, the Colombian cyclist has come in second to France’s Bryan Coquard for overall scores in the last four World Cups (Astana, Cali, Beijing, and London).
