Colombian cyclist Soler leaves intensive care, returns to Spain

After three weeks in an Intensive Care Unit in Switzerland, Colombian cyclist Mauricio Soler will be sent home Friday to Spain to continue his recovery, various media report.

The cycling champion’s wife, Patricia Flores, confirmed that he is scheduled to be airlifted to the University Hospital of Nevarra in Pamplona.

“He will be taken by helicopter ambulance which will take aproximately one and half hours. Mauricio has been showing improvement so the doctors think [the move] would be ideal, considering the comfort and ease of language, which matters a lot for his recovery,” said Flores.

Soler suffered very serious injuries in a crash on June 16 during the Tour of Switzerland. He had sustained life threatening brain injuries and was in critical condition for five days. Doctors and friends have been reporting signs of progress.
