Colombian champeta singer ‘El Afinaito’ dies at 36

Colombian champeta singer El Afinaito died at 36 Saturday after a short sickbed.

The singer, considered one of the best-known performers of the Caribbean music style, passed away after suffering a cardiorespiratory infection.

El Afinaito, whose real name was Serguio Liñan Meza, was hospitalized in the northern city of Barranquilla last week after returning from a three-day tour in Venezuela.

According to local newspaper El Heraldo, the singer was planning the recording of a new record this week.

El Afinaito is the second prominent champeta singer to pass away this year: in July, singer “El Sayayin” was assassinated in the town of Sincelejo.
