Colombian-born fashion designer Haider Ackermann has said he’s no one hit wonder in an interview with Metro.
The designer has recently enjoyed tremendous popularity, after more than a decade of working in fashion. The buzz recently became a crescendo after the creative director of the Chanel fashion house, Karl Lagerfeld, said he’d like to see Ackermann succeed him.
“Certain things happen and you realize just how much power a single person can have,” said Ackermann. But the designer was quick to downplay the excitement saying, “I’ve never been attracted to the person of the moment. The idea of being a passing moment always kind of scared me. I showed my first collection in 2003 and could not have gotten to this place without all of the building I did before.”
Akermann was born in Colombia but spent his childhood abroad in places like Ethiopia, Chad, Algeria, France, and the Netherlands. The diverse background is reflected in his work which draws upon high and low fashion and materials from all over the world.
His designs have been worn by celebrities such as Tilda Swinton, Penelope Cruz and Janet Jackson.
