Actress Carolina Ramirez will play a famous Colombian independence fighter battling to save an impossible love, in a new TV series to mark the country’s bicentennial of independence.

“La Pola,” documents the life of Policarpa Salavarrieta (also known as “La Pola”), a young patriot who spied for the Colombian armed forces during the period when Spain tried to regain control of its colonies in South America.

The series will focus on the her secret love with fellow revolutionary Alejo Sabarain, with whom she was publicly executed on November 14, 1817.

RCN fittingly created the series to mark 200 years of Colombia’s independence from Spain, which is officially celebrated July 20.

In an interview with newspaper El Tiempo, Ramirez admitted the role was “quite a responsibility,” which she prepared for by reading a lot of biographies and history books.

When asked what aspect of the character she most admired, the actress replied “her balls… definitely, her bravery.”

La Pola is scheduled to air on RCN August 9.
