Colombian banana workers continue strike over pay

Banana farm workers in Colombia’s key growing region continue to strike
over pay and benefits. Banana companies, union leaders and
representatives of the national government did not find an agreement on
Sunday.

Due to the lack of serious proposals in terms of wage increase, we failed rapprochement with the banana guild, the National Union of Workers of the Agricultural Industry, Sintrainagro, said.

The strike lasts for 12 days this Monday and involves 16 thousand workers in the banana industry.

Some banana workers were intimidated or received threats, which Sintrainagro believes to come from the involved companies, El Tiempo reported.

On Monday, employers and banana workers will meet again to try to reach an agreement to end the strike.
