Colombian running prodigy wins bronze medal

An eighteen-year old Colombian runner won the bronze medal at the World Junior Athletics Championships in Barcelona Tuesday.

Sandra Arenas came third in the 10,000 meters event on the second day of competition. She secured a place on the podium with a time of 45:44:46. Arenas’ performance was surpassed only by the Russian Ekaterina Medvedeva (45:41.74) and Nadezhda Leontyeva (45:43.64)

Arenas comes from the city of Pereira, located in the western province of Risaralda. Her bronze medal is the first for any Latin American at the games thus far.
