Colombian aid to arrive in Haiti today

A Colombian airforce plane will fly to Haiti Thursday, bringing doctors, medical equipment and food supplies to the earthquake-stricken Caribbean island where officials fear the death toll may top 100,000.

The plane is scheduled to leave at 8AM, carrying medical equipment such as masks, sterilized gloves, and a temporary military hospital with seven Colombian medics who can perform complex surgeries.

On board the plane are also twenty rescue workers and dogs, experts in locating survivors and the deceased after disasters.

The aircraft will also hold 4,000 pounds of provisions for the Colombian members of the UN peacekeeping force in Haiti, where food has become scarce and many shops are closed for fear of massive looting.

Colombia is one of dozens of countries sending rescue workers and supplies to the Caribbean island nation, one of the poorest in the world.

The earthquake that destroyed the country on Tuesday left at least 10,000 people dead, but local officials fear the number of deaths may top 100,000.
