Colombia will maintain “excellent relations” with new Brazilian leader

Colombian Vice President Angelino Garzon on Sunday said Colombia will maintain “a level of understanding” with Brazil following the election of the country’s new president.

“With the new Brazilian government, Colombia will maintain the excellent relations we have been having with President [Luiz Inacio] Lula [de Silva],” Garzon said. He added that Colombia intends to strengthen its relationship with the neighboring country and maintain cooperation between them.

On Sunday Brazil elected Dilma Rousseff, Lula’s former chief of staff and a former energy minister, to the presidency. Rousseff was also a former guerrilla and was imprisoned and tortured for three years before being released and holding a variety of mid-level government positions. Lula, who was forbidden for running for a third term by the Brazilian constitution, picked Rousseff as his successor.
