Colombia, Venezuela to sign new anti-drugs agreement

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez will meet on Saturday 9 to sign a new document aimed at improving cooperation between the neighbouring nations in the fight against drugs, UPI reports.

Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera outlined the key themes of the agreement, which he defined as “an instrument to address the world drug problem. It can create an appropriate legal framework to share intelligence, strengthen judicial cooperation and the operations at all levels against all stages of the phenomenon.”

He said that the agreement will seek to expand on the communication channels already in operation between the two countries, adding that the new document will be mutually beneficial financially as it will allow “one country’s resources to serve the purposes of the other.”

President Chavez was due to arrive Friday April 1, but after an initial delay following technical problems with the Venezuelan leader’s plane the trip was postponed until Saturday 9, when he will arrive in the Caribbean coastal town of Cartagena.
