Colombia to propose ‘general disarmament’ at Security Council

Colombia, who took a seat on the U.N. Security Council on January 1, said Sunday it will promote its “historical position of general and complete disarmament.”

In an interview with newspaper El Tiempo, Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin said that Colombia “seeks to strengthen the multilateral mechanisms and regimes of the United Nations to strengthen peace and security.”

Colombia’s aim is “to stop any military nuclear threat, wherever it comes from,” she added.

Regarding Venezuela’s announcement to develop nuclear energy, the foreign minister said to be “calm,” because the International Atomic Energy Agency exists “so that countries can choose nuclear energy without being a military threat.”

Colombia, who became a non-permament member of the security council this year, and Brazil, also a non- permanent member, are representing Latin America on the highest international security body.
