Colombia to manufacture electric car

Colombia will begin to produce an electric car invented by a group of university students from the north-eastern department of Santander.

Production of the two-door, four-person car by manufacturer Yake will begin in January 2010.

The car, which was christened Tricero and has a maximum speed of 90 kilometers per hour, runs on a battery attached to the floor of the car.

The battery must be charged for eight hours from a 110 volts outlet at a cost of COP3,000 (US$1.50) to travel 75 kilometers.

The environmentally friendly vehicle was designed with three wheels but will also be produced with four, Caracol Radio reported.

The Tricero will be manufactured in Floridablanca, Santander. The three wheel version retails at 38 million pesos (around US$19,000), the four wheel version costs COP45 million (around US$22,500). Both come with a two year warranty.
