Colombia to extradite Makled to Venezuela, not US

Colombia’s interior and justice minister on Wednesday announced that his government will extradite alleged drug lord Walid Makled to his home country and not to the U.S., who also sought the Venezuelan’s extradition.

The official announcement came expected after Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos had already announced his preference to extradite the disgraced businessman to Venezuela, as the charges against Makled in that country are higher than in the U.S. and because Colombia’s neighbor was first to request the extradition.

According to the Interior and Justice Minister, German Vargas Lleras, Makled could be extradited within five days.

Makled, who says he fears his human rights will be violated in Venezuela, said recently he would tell U.S. prosecutors about ties between the Venezuelan government of Hugo Chavez and terrorist groups like the Colombian FARC and Hezbollah from Beirut.
