Colombia through to semi finals at Women’s U-20 World Cup

by Jonathan Roorda July 24, 2010

Colombia news - Yorely Rincon

The Colombian women’s Under-20 team is through to the semi finals of the World Cup in Germany following a 2-0 victory over Sweden.

One of the traditional top nations in women’s soccer, Sweden, had comfortably won their group before facing Colombia in the quarter final played in Bielefeld

And the opening goal came on 11 minutes when a great distance strike from Yorely Rincon went in at the left post leaving keeper Carlen stranded.

The close to 5000 spectators saw Colombia double the lead another 11 minutes later. Tatiana Ariza took advantage of poor Swedish defending and beautifully directed the ball past the opposing keeper for 2-0.

The damage could have been even bigger for the Swedes as Colombia continued to attack, although the Scandinavians would have pulled one back in the second half if Jacobsson’s effort had not been cleared off the line by a defender.

Colombia will now face either the United States or Nigeria in the semi final, which is to be played in Bielefeld on July 29th.
