Colombia te re-establish relations with Ecuador on two conditions

by Adriaan Alsema November 21, 2008

Colombia will restore relations with Ecuador on two conditions: It
demands Ecuador to maintain prudent in public statements about its
northern neighbor and wants agreements on how to fight the FARC in the
border area, Colombia’s Foreign Minister Jaime Bermúdez said Thursday.

The Foreign Minister demands Ecuador to show “caution and discretion” in public statements and wants Colombia’s southern neighbor “to seek mechanisms of cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking, terrorism and particularly the control of the border,” Bermúdez told Caracol Radio.

Bermúdez said that for the moment it would be better to seek other than diplomatic rapprochement.

“Let there be more commercial interaction, exchanges between universities and between civil society,” he said.

Ecuador broke off relations with Colombia days after a Colombian cross-border attack on a FARC camp that killed guerrilla commander Raúl Reyes and 25 others.
