Colombia Soccer League Preview – Week 16

by Charlie de Rivaz October 25, 2013

This Friday sees the battle for the top 8 play-off positions hot up, with Medellin hoping to steal ahead of a Patriotas team in the middle of a dire run of form. Then on Saturday two high-flyers face up in Bogota, before Sunday’s visit of Millonarios to the Caribbean coast.

Friday, October 25 – 7:45pm
Patriotas vs. Medellin

With three games left of the regular season, these two teams sit just outside of the top eight, which means that at present neither team will qualify for the knock-out stage of the league. Whichever team wins on Friday will move into the prized play-off positions, with the form book suggesting that it will be Medellin who take all three points.

Medellin have taken 11 points from 18 in their last 6 matches, while Patriotas, who sit a point above Medellin, have suffered a torrid run, taking just 4 points in the same period. They haven’t won since September 14.

Saturday, October 26 – 5pm
Santa Fe vs. Pasto

Last week Pasto, currently sitting in second place, had the chance to put some breathing space between themselves and the pack chasing them, especially after Cali, then in third place, lost to Millonarios. But they threw away a 2-1 lead against lowly Huila to end their run of three consecutive wins. If they lose to Santa Fe, who have only lost one of their last 9 games, then they will be leapfrogged by the Bogota team.

Sunday, October 27 – 3:15pm
Junior vs. Millonarios

Millonarios finally returned to winning ways last week against high-flying Cali, and will hope to secure their spot in the play-offs with a win over sixth-placed Junior.

Baranquilla-based Junior will themselves hope to leapfrog Millonarios, but their chances of doing so are slim given their penchant for drawing – they have drawn their last 3 matches, despite scoring 5 goals.
