Colombia seizes biggest ever contraband haul

The seizure of $15 million in contraband in the port of Buenaventura, on Colombia’s Pacific coast, is the largest seizure the police have ever made in a single operation, reports Caracol Radio.

“This is the single largest seizure at the port of Buenaventura,” said national police chief General Oscar Naranjo.

The goods originate from China and Panama and were carried on a Nigerian-flagged ship.

The eight containers seized were filled with jewelry, appliances, perfumes and clothing.

This operation coincided with an announcement from Colombia’s taxation agency DIAN that around $66 million of contraband has been seized coming into Colombia in the first trimester of 2010.
