Colombia sees record car sales in 2011

Colombian car assemblers, dealers and distributors ended the year with a historic 320,000 new cars, 26% more than 2010 when 253,869 were produced, economic publication Portafolio reported.

Despite the inevitable increases in the interest rate and the rate of the dollar to the peso Andres Aguirre, head of Chrysler Colombia estimates sales for next year of 350,000 units.

He said, “If these factors don’t have too much influence, and more makes and models continue to arrive, [if cars are] replaced and demand for commercial cars – for example for those working in oil, construction, mining, business – continue to grow the record will be broken again. This year Chrysler Colombia sold 3,800 units, 1,000 more than in 2010.”

Aguirre estimates that by the end of December a minimum of 28,000 vehicles will be sold, 11.7% more than in the same month in 2010, when 25,556 cars were sold.

Hector Corredor, vice president of Daimler Colombia (Mercedes Benz), said that this year 4,000 units were sold; 1,729 more than in 2010.
