Colombia receives first US products under FTA

Colombia has received its first U.S. products under the new Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Colombia’s statistics department said Wednesday.

The products included 300 breathing masks, machine valves, a tractor chasis, white corn, chicken paste, mechanically deboned chiken, Harley Davidson motorcycles and drilling equipment.

Before the FTA, these products were subject to tariffs ranging from 5-40%. Under the FTA tariffs on the majority of products between the two countries were completely eliminated. Tariffs on certain “protected,” industries will be phased out over periods of 10-19 years.

Colombian authorities celebrated the first shipment of good to the U.S. under the FTA, Tuesday.
