Edwin Cardona converted a 71st-minute penalty to lift Colombia to a 1-1 draw with Ecuador in South American Under-20 World Cup qualifying Monday.
Ecuador took a 1-0 lead in the Group B match after Juan Cazares’ 30th-minute penalty, but a draw was about the right outcome in an evenly played match.
In a late match Monday, Brazil played Paraguay in Group B.
In Sunday’s opening-day matches, Argentina defeated neighbour Uruguay 2-1 and Chile beat Peru 2-0 in Group A.
The tournament ends Feb. 12 and the top four advance to the U-20 World Cup later this year in Colombia. The top two earn berths in the 2012 London Olympics.
