Colombia proposes female UNASUR secretary general

Colombia will propose former Foreign Minister Maria Emma Mejia to succeed the deceased Nestor Kirchner as secretary general of UNASUR, W Radio reported Friday.

According to the radio station, President Juan Manuel Santos will officially announce Mejia’s candidacy at the Ibero-American summit held in Argentina this Friday and Saturday.

Colombia is not the only country to propose a secretary general for the Organization of South American Nations; Venezuela announced it will propose diplomat Ali Rodriguez Araque for the same position.
