Colombia proposes new extradition treaty to Holder

by Adriaan Alsema June 9, 2009

Colombia news - Fabio Valencia

Colombia’s Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio asked
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to consider a new treaty on the
extradition of Colombians to the U.S.

“We want to refine the current mechanisms and design new ones. This could well be though a memorandum of understanding or, if necessary, through a new treaty,” Valencia Cossio said.

According to the Colombian Minister, the U.S. have expressed a “certain concern” about past rulings by the Supreme Court that disallowed the extradition of Colombians charged before a U.S. court.

According to Valencia Cossio, redefining the collaboration of the two justice systems would be prefereable.

“All of us here, including the Court, appreciate extradition. We need to see how to make things more effective and according to new realities,” the Minister said.

Valencia and Holder met Monday to discuss a number of bilateral issues.
