Colombia population to approach 51 million by 2020

Colombia will have a population of 50.9 million in 2020, almost five million more than today, according according to national statistics department DANE, El Espectador reports.

A total of 39.2 million will live in urban areas (up from 34.2 million today) and 11.6 million will live in rural areas (up from 11.1 million today).

The country’s fertility rate will drop to 2.3 in 2020, down from 3.3 children per woman in 1985 and 2.4 between 2005 and 2010. The infant mortality rate will also fall to 15.1 per 1,000 live births, down from 19.9 in 2010.

Life expectancy in Colombia is currently at 74 years, above the 2005 Latin American average of 70 years.

The figures were released Thursday to mark World Population Day.
