Colombia police seize 2 tons of marijuana

Colombia police seized two tons of marijuana Tuesday allegedly being smuggled out of the country by the FARC.

The haul was found in a truck at a police checkpoint on the Pan American Highway in west Colombia, according to El Espectador.

Police said the marijuana was wrapped in 145 rectangular packages that were hidden inside tables with fake drawers. The packages smelt strongly of marijuana and on further inspection tested positive for the substance.

The truck driver, Francisco Javier Chavez Caicedo, was arrested and will be charged with manufacturing, trafficking and possession of drugs.

The truck was stopped between western Colombian towns of Buga and Tulua in the Valle del Cauca department, but police alleged that it was loaded in Corinto in the department of Cauca, where the 6th Front of the FARC depends heavily on marijuana production and smuggling.

Police say the haul was destined for La Guajira in northern Colombia and then for foreign markets. It has a value of $880,000 in Colombia or up to three times as much abroad.

The drugs were seized by the Narcotics Division taking part in a Comprehensive Security Plan in Tulua.
