Colombia one of world’s least peaceful countries: Study

Colombia, despite its improvement, is still one of the least peaceful countries in the world according to the Global Peace Index.

The South American nation is ranked 130th on a list of 144 countries, first place being the most peaceful and 144th being the least.

The Global Peace Index analyzes nations’ “peacefulness” based on factors such as military expenditure, levels of violence, democracy and corruption,
education, respect for human rights and material well being. A lower score on the list indicates a more peaceful country.

Colombia’s ranking at 130 is at least in part because of its poor scoring in peace determinants such as terrorist attacks and murders per 100,000 inhabitants.

New Zealand tops the list in first place and Iraq is last in 144th place.

The Index, now in its third year, found a connection between economics and peace and suggests a correlation between the intensification of violent conflict and the global economic crisis.
