President Juan Manuel Santos says that Colombia is “ready” to help ease the transition of power in Egypt following President Hosni Mubarak’s resignation, according to a government press release.
Mubarak ceded power Friday amid extended rioting and protests directed against his leadership after 30 years of his rule.
Santos states that through “our presence on the Security Council of the United Nations,” Colombia is ready to “contribute our grain of sand” towards Egypt’s transition into a democratic power full of “peace and prosperity.”
Colombia’s Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holquin added that the “country is watching carefully what is happening in Egypt.”
She noted that “it is a very complicated situation, especially in a country like Egypt, [which is] of great importance to the Arab world,” El Tiempo reports.
Protesters had been demanding Mubarak’s resignation for weeks in the country’s capital, Cairo.
