Colombia needs to import coffee to meet domestic demand

Colombia, the world’s largest coffee producer after Brazil,
will need to import coffee to meet the domestic demand, the country’s
coffee export federation announced Monday.

According to Asoexport director Jorge Lozano, Colombia is not producing enough coffee to both meet the demands by the export sector and the domestic market and is short of some 300,000 bags.

Colombia should import coffee from neighbors Ecuador and Peru to be able to meet the demand of the domestic market and avoid a drastic increase of price of coffee inside the country, Lozano said.

Colombia’s production plummeted 21 percent this year, because of the winter, low fertilization and the renovation of coffee
plantations, the coffee growers federation Fedecafe announced earlier.
