Colombia’s ladies tennis team continued its Fed Cup success Wednesday with victory over Paraguay in the Fed Cup Wednesday.
The victory was tighter than the clean sweeps against Venezuela and Bolivia, with Mariana Duque losing her singles match against Veronica Cepede [6-4, 6-4]. But Catalina Castaño took victory against Monserrat Gonzalez [6-1, 6-3] and in the deciding doubles match Duque and Castaño defeated Cepede and Gonzalez [6-4, 6-4].
In the other game of the day Brazil defeated Venezuela 2-1, giving them an outside chance of qualification if they can win their two remaining match-ups.
Colombia’s win is their third in the competition, giving them maximum points and meaning victory against hosts Brazil on Friday will guarantee progress from the Americas Group One Pool B.
The winner of Pool B will go to a play-off agaisnt the winner of Americas Group One Pool A, consisting of Canada, Argentina, Peru and the Bahamas. Canada yesterday defeated Peru 2-1, while Argentina defeated the Bahamas 3-0.
The winner of the play-off will go through to
