Colombia loses 23 tons of gold in 2 years

Senator Jorge Robledo announced Tuesday that at least 23 tons of gold with a value of around $986 million went missing between 2009 and 2011.

According to Robledo, the 23 tons of gold were registered in the production figures for that period but not appear in the export figures.

The senator denounced the massive disappearance of gold as a potentially enormous fraud, saying, “We could be talking about money laundering, and there could have been an enormous instance of fraud.”

Robledo made the accusation during a Senate meeting about the payment of royalties by the mining sector.
