Southwest Colombia govenor banned over corruption

A governor from the southwest of Colombia was barred from holding office for three years Monday for “irregularities in recruitment.”

Governor Cielo Gonzalez of the Huila department faced the ban after evidence that she manipulated the recruitment of her staff unlawfully.

This is the third sanction for corruption against the former governor which means that, due to a three-strike policy, she now was granted the three-year penalty.

Gonzalez also faces a lawsuit for allegedly spending tax money on improvements to the department’s infrastructure that was never carried out.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos will now face the task of appointing an interim governor while new local elections are organized.
