Colombia finish fourth at Under-17 World Cup

Colombia finish the 2009 Under-17 World Cup in fourth position following Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the match for third place.

Spain were the slightly better team throughout the match but it was exactly in a phase in which Colombia came close to scoring, that the Spanish scored the only goal of the match.

Blanco first mis-hit the ball but was then given a second chance to strike into the left corner with Colombia’s defense unable to react.

Not much earlier, a Colombian effort had been cleared off the line by a Spanish defender.

Although the last two matches did not have the desired outcome, Colombia may look back on a highly successful campaign.

The Colombian youngsters finished second in a group with Iran, the Netherlands and Gambia, beating the Dutch 2-1 in their opening game. Argentina were knocked out in the round of sixteen, and Turkey were beaten on penalties in the quarter finals. Only the Swiss managed to stop Colombia, 4-0 in the semi final.
